The Danube Bend region has some of the finest scenery in the country close to Budapest, where many fiercely guarded treasures of our culture may be found. Abounding in valuable monuments, with both historical and natural sights, it is rightly a popular destination for domestic and international tourism. Historic towns and cities of special significance: Esztergom, the first capital of this country, which is still the seat of the Roman Catholic Church in Hungary; Visegrád, famous for its castle and magnificent Renaissance palace; Szentendre, renowned for its Mediterranean atmosphere, museums and open air museum; Vác, glorying in fine examples of Baroque and Neo-classical architecture. The hills along the bank abound in natural beauty (Visegrád Range, Pilis, Börzsöny), each section of the Danube valley displays a difference aspect to delight the eyes, and the Ipoly valley is also picturesque. The largest section of the area belongs to the Danube-Ipoly NP.
Visitors here can select from countless leisure time activities: cycling, mountain-biking, hiking, visits to the beach, therapeutic bathing, water sports, angling, hunting, horse-riding, etc.
A cycle path runs almost all the way along the left bank of the Danube, and on the right bank from Budapest to Leányfalu. There are extremely varied opportunities for tours in the surrounding districts. You can ride through hills and valleys, woods and meadows, picturesque valleys with rivers and streams, and on cross-country routes filled with challenges. You can also take your bike with you on the narrow-gauge forest railway.
