Description

Bicycle atlas and guide of Balaton and surroundings
Format: A5, 144 pages, spiralbound

.

In the chapter entitled Sights, the most important sights of the towns and settlements are outlined in three languages (memorials, museums, archaeological or ethnographic monuments, natural beauty spots, nature protection areas, the goals of a few significant hikes, annual events).

The cyclist’s atlas of the Balaton region to a scale of 1: 80,000 is detailed, colourful and polyglot, and includes 24 tour recommendations and town maps. It is an easy to use guidebook, supplemented with useful information and details of interesting sights. Lake Balaton is encircled by the Balaton Bike Ring (BBR), more than 200 km long, and tours leading into the surrounding countryside are linked to this.

On these tours, the interesting and unusual sights of the Balaton region may be discovered. The region around the lake is presented on 26 pages of detailed mapping at 1:80,000. The overprint highlights the BBR (Balaton Bike Ring) and other local routes, indicating roads with separate cycle paths, the type of road surface, gradients, particularly picturesque sections, and intermediate distance. Waymarked hiking routes are also shown.

Symbols mark various places of interest, accommodation including youth hostels and campsites, recreational facilities including beaches and riding stables, cycle rental and repair shops, bus stations, petrol stations, etc. The maps have latitude and longitude lines at intervals of 5’. Map legend includes English.

Explanation of the map symbols is in five languages (Hungarian, German, English, French, Dutch).

The Recommended Tours section includes suggestions for 24 routes in Hungarian, German and English, which list interesting sights and famous tourist attractions. For each tour, a list of places along the route, the length of the route in km, and a brief description of important features (degree of difficulty, topography) are to be found.

The tours are mainly along quiet main roads, or on cycle paths marked with green signs, in places on dirt roads. Many variants on the 24 recommended tours are possible. Some tours are long and others short. These may be ridden in either direction, split into sections, or linked together (e. g. using the connecting routes marked on the map).

Street plans, overprinted with the cycle routes, are provided for 13 local towns. Each of the recommended routes has a brief description, with short notes also describing the region’s most interesting locations and monuments, all in English. The atlas is indexed and had contact addresses of local tourist information centres, campsites, etc.

Several addresses of useful information for tourists are provided (tourist information offices, bicycle services, cycle hire firms, possibilities for accommodation: hotels, motels, youth hostels, campsites). This compilation is ideal for cyclists, and may be used en route, or when the trip is planned. The fine photographs illustrating the publication whet your appetite for touring, or help you choose a goal for your trip.
